Malta: is an island state, a member of the European Union since 1 May 2004. Malta joined the euro area on 1 January 2008.It is the smallest state of the European Union and it is also, apart from the city-states, the densest in the world. The Republic of Malta is an archipelago which consists of eight islands, four of which are inhabited, located between the eastern and western Mediterranean Sea 93 kilometers from Sicily. Its strategic location has earned him the envy of many powers over the ages.
